How to Delete Facebook Stories - Active and Archived
updated 11 July 2026
Quick answer
To delete an active story, open it, tap the three-dot icon in the corner and choose Delete. The story disappears from your profile after 24 hours anyway, but it stays in your story archive. You delete it from the archive the same way - through the three-dot menu and the delete option.
Step by step
- 1
Open your active story
Tap your profile picture with the story ring at the top of the app. The story plays full screen. If you have several slides, move to the one you want to delete.
- 2
Open the three-dot menu
In the corner of the screen you will find a three-dot icon. Tap it to open the options for that story slide. You will see saving, sharing and deleting, among others.
- 3
Choose Delete and confirm
Tap Delete, then confirm your decision. The slide disappears from your active story immediately, before the 24 hours are up. No one new will see it.
- 4
Check your story archive
Even a deleted or expired story can sit in the archive if you have it turned on. Go to your profile, open the menu and look for the Archive section. It is a private space visible only to you.
- 5
Delete the story from the archive
In the archive, open the story, tap the three dots and choose to remove it from the archive. Only this step deletes it from your saved history too. Without it, the story disappears from your profile but stays in your archive.
Why a story disappears, but not completely
A Facebook story is visible to others for 24 hours, then it comes off your profile on its own. That does not mean it stops existing - by default it lands in the story archive, a private section only you can see. This lets you come back to old stories later or share them again.
If you want to get rid of the material completely, waiting out the 24 hours is not enough. You have to delete the story from the archive as well, otherwise it stays on your account indefinitely. This is the most common reason people think they deleted a story when it is still there.
How to turn off story archiving
If you do not want stories piling up in your archive, turn this feature off in your story settings. Open the archive settings from your profile and switch off automatic saving. From then on, new stories vanish after 24 hours without a trace.
Turning off archiving does not delete what is already in the archive. You have to remove older stories manually, one by one. The change only applies going forward.
Who saw your story and how to check
While the story is active, swipe up on it or tap the view count in the bottom corner. Facebook shows a list of the people who watched it. The viewer list is only available during the 24 hours the story is live.
Once the story expires, you can no longer see the viewer list, even if the material stayed in your archive. Who can see the story itself is something you set beforehand in its privacy options - you can pick friends, specific people, or exclude particular contacts.
Frequently asked questions
›How do I delete a Facebook story before the 24 hours are up?
Open the active story, tap the three dots in the corner and choose Delete. The slide disappears immediately and no one new will see it. You can delete a single slide this way, or the whole story one slide at a time.
›I deleted a story but a friend says they saw it - how is that possible?
Someone could have watched the story before you deleted it, because it was live from the moment you posted it. After deleting, it will not appear to anyone new, but you cannot undo earlier views. A screenshot someone took also stays beyond Facebook's control.
›Does deleting a story from the archive notify my friends?
No, the archive is private and visible only to you. Deleting anything from the archive sends no notification. Your friends do not know what you have saved or what you delete.
›Where do I find the story archive on my phone?
Go to your profile, open the menu and look for the Archive entry. By default, all your expired stories collect there. The section is private and no one but you can see it.
›Can I delete all archived stories at once?
Facebook offers no single button to wipe the whole archive, so you delete stories one by one through the three-dot menu. With a lot of entries this takes a while. Turning off archiving stops new stories from piling up.
