How to Clean Up Your Phone: Storage, Viruses and a Clogged Speaker

   Free up storage with the Files app

   Open the Files by Google app and go to the Clean tab. It finds junk files, duplicates, screenshots and large files you can delete with one tap. It is the fastest way to reclaim a few gigabytes without the risk of deleting anything important.

   Clear app caches

   Go to Settings, then Apps, pick the app taking up the most space, tap Storage and then Clear cache. The cache is temporary files, so deleting it breaks nothing. Do this with your browser and messaging apps, because they bloat the most.

   Move photos and videos to the cloud

   Photos usually take up the most space. Turn on backup in Google Photos or another cloud service, and once it finishes, use the Free up space option, which removes local copies already saved online. You will still see the files in the app - they just get downloaded when needed.

   Remove suspicious apps and scan the phone

   Go through your app list and uninstall anything you do not recognize or use. Then open the Play Store, tap your profile picture and run Play Protect to scan the phone. It is Google's built-in, free tool for detecting malicious apps.

   Clean a dirty speaker

   Sweep dust off the speaker mesh with a soft brush, such as a clean, dry toothbrush. Pick up stubborn grime with a piece of painter's tape pressed sticky side down onto the openings. Never push in a needle or a pin, because it is easy to pierce the membrane and damage the speaker for good.

   Factory reset as a last resort

   If the phone still misbehaves or you want to sell it, back up your data and do a reset via Settings, System and then Reset, or on Samsung phones via General management and Reset. This returns the phone to factory condition and erases everything, so only do it after confirming the backup worked.

Is there really a virus on your phone

Before you start fighting a virus, check the symptoms. Intrusive full-screen ads, apps you never installed, a fast-draining battery and overheating are the typical signals. Slow performance on its own usually means full storage, not malware.

On Android, most threats arrive with apps from outside the Play Store. If you installed APK files from unknown sites, start by removing them, then revoke device admin rights from suspicious apps in Settings. On the iPhone, classic viruses practically do not exist - it is more often calendar spam or pushy website notifications.

Regular tidying instead of one big cleanup

A phone is easier to keep in shape with small clean-ups every so often. Once a month, review your apps and remove the ones you have not opened in ages. With cloud photo backup switched on, the gallery will not fill up your storage by itself.

Be wary of apps that promise magical cleaning and speed boosts. Many of them show ads and eat storage themselves, while Android's built-in tools do the same job for free and without tracking. Files by Google and the system settings are all the cleanup tools you need.

Safely cleaning the body and ports

Beyond storage and the speaker, look after the body itself. Turn the phone off, take it out of its case and wipe the screen and back with a slightly damp, soft microfiber cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a cloth dampened with water, not alcohol-based cleaners or bleach, because those damage the screen coating over time.

Clean the charging port dry only. A dirty port can interrupt charging, and gently picking the lint out with a wooden toothpick while the phone is off usually solves the problem. Do not stick metal pins or needles into the port and do not blow into it with your mouth, because moisture and metal easily damage the contacts.
